Stantec

case study

The big idea
With a proud ten-year history in Manchester, this global leader in sustainable consultancy, architecture, and environmental consulting wanted to bring multiple teams together under one roof in a creative and aspirational space.
The initial brief asked us to design and fit-out two-thirds of the seventh floor of their new home at 101 Barbirolli Square. The remaining third was to be left untouched until the business was ready to expand, which, as it happened, took place just a few months after we finished on site.
Our big idea was to create a collaborative office that puts community experience front and centre, reflecting Stantec’s reputation and commitment to knowledge sharing and collaboration. And, because we knew the second phase would need to connect seamlessly to the first– we designed it with flexibility and easy integration in mind.

Nailing the brief
Our design made the moment of arrival all about experiencing the Stantec community – a feature we’ve included in other offices within the group. A vibrant social hub, which accommodates reception, soft seating, and a refreshment area, sets the tone for employees and visitors and shows that the consultancy prioritises teamwork, connection, and belonging.
Playful customised wallpaper, which features illustrations from Stantec graphic design teams, adorns the walls and gives the space a personal touch. Plus, we’ve used lots of local design inspiration – featuring the iconic Manchester worker bee in artwork and exposing services to reflect the city’s industrial heritage.

The social space flows seamlessly into a client suite and training area and then into an open floorplate, where meeting pods, booths, and soft seating support Stantec’s team’s love of agile working. To maximise Stantec’s budget and avoid unnecessary waste, we worked with the building’s fabric and existing M&E system, locating meeting rooms where space allowed.
When the business was ready, we used modular furniture and flexible design to accommodate the expansion of the office. Stantec’s acquisition of national integrated engineering consultancy, Hydrock sparked this second phase, so we hosted workshops to identify their teams’ needs and seamlessly blend the two spaces.

The final result
The finished space celebrates Stantec’s brilliant workforce. Community and connection are encouraged everywhere, sending a clear message that collaboration is supported and actively encouraged!
